Some jobs are dangerous. Some workplaces are littered with sharp debris. Some have greasy, slippery floors. Some use heavy machinery and are loud enough to damage your hearing. These are conditions that cannot be avoided in some roles, but there is equipment you can have on site to keep you safe at work.
The easiest way to keep yourself safe at work is to keep your body personally protected. The extremities of the body, for instance, are the most at risk because they do the most work. Fingers can get caught in areas that open and close and wear and tear adds up. Wearing the right glove for the job is the best way to prevent damage to your hands. If you are a butcher, wearing chainmail will keep your knife from slipping through your fingers. If you work with a shovel in your hands all day, a rugged leather glove will prevent your skin from blistering.
Your head and face are susceptible to falling and flying items that can damage the skull or get in your eyes or lungs. Hard hats absorb the shock of an object that strikes your head to protect from concussion or fracturing the skull. Wearing a hard hat can prevent brain damage and time off work. Wearing safety glasses keeps debris out of your eyes, which can cause irritation or vision loss.
Keeping the jobsite stocked with safety equipment keeps everyone working safe. Having fire extinguishers in multiple areas for multiple conditions makes it possible to put out fires quickly before they spread and get out of control.
Safety signs mark conditions someone on site should be aware of. If there are power lines overhead, there should be a sign. If hardhats and safety boots are required, there should be a sign. Marking conditions keeps people who are unprepared for the site away from danger and reduces accidents.
All workplaces are not created equal, and some are more dangerous than others. All workplaces have potential for accidents and personal injury, and therefore all should have safety equipment at the ready. Making sure your workplace is stocked with safety equipment will make sure everyone on site stays safe.
